Wearable Technology May Help Detect Depression Relapse Before It Occurs
Research has shown that wearable trackers may be able to detect depression relapse before it occurs by monitoring sleep patterns. Sleep disturbances are known to be linked to depression, and detecting a relapse before it happens can help prevent it altogether.
A recent study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that a wrist-worn device, such as a smartwatch, may be able to signal when a person is at increased risk of a major depressive disorder (MDD) relapse. MDD, also known as clinical depression, is a common mental health condition characterized by persistent sadness and loss of interest in activities.
The study, which followed 93 adults who had previously recovered from depression, found that wearable trackers could detect the probability of a relapse weeks or months before it occurs. In fact, up to 60% of people with MDD will experience at least one relapse episode in their lifetime.
“Advances in digital technology and AI algorithms have great potential for relapse prevention in mental health,” said Benicio Frey, MD, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University. “Imagine a future where a smartwatch can warn people with depression: ‘A new episode of depression is very likely coming within the next four weeks. How about seeing your healthcare provider?’”
Wearable Trackers Detect MDD Relapse
The study used research-grade actigraphy devices, such as FitBits or Apple Watches, to track participants' sleep and activity patterns over a period of 1-2 years. The data collected showed that:
- Participants with irregular sleep profiles were nearly twice as likely to experience a relapse.
- The strongest predictor of relapse was a lack of difference between daytime activity and nighttime rest.
This study highlights the potential for wearable technology to detect depression relapse before it occurs, allowing individuals to take proactive steps towards prevention. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, our team at [Clinic Name] is here to help.
