Sun protection is crucial, especially during the warmer months. However, not all sunscreens are created equal. According to a recent report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), only about 20% of sunscreens meet leading safety and efficacy standards.

When choosing a sunscreen, look for products that offer broad-spectrum protection with an SPF of 30 to 50. Proper application and regular reapplication are also essential for effective sun protection.

The Importance of Sunscreen Safety

The EWG rates products based on five key factors: health hazards, UVB protection, UVA protection, balance of UVA and UVB protection, and sunscreen stability. While mineral sunscreens are generally considered safer, the best sunscreen is one that you use consistently and reapply regularly.

Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen

Cosmetic surgeon and skin cancer specialist Paul Banwell notes that both mineral and chemical sunscreens can be effective, but certain skin types may tolerate one better than the other. Mineral sunscreens, which contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, sit on the skin to physically reflect UV rays away.

Expert Insights

Tanya Evans, MD, board certified dermatologist and medical director of the Skin Cancer Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA, emphasizes that sunscreen is still one of the most effective tools for reducing sunburn, photoaging, and skin cancer risk. "The main message should not be to avoid sunscreen, but instead to choose and use sunscreen wisely," she says.

Staying Ahead of Sunscreen Regulatory Gaps

The FDA has proposed classifying bemotrizinol as a safe and effective sunscreen ingredient, which would be the first time in decades that a new filter was allowed in U.S. markets. While this is an important step forward, it's essential to continue advocating for safer and more effective sunscreens.
