**A Heartwarming Story of Love and Resilience** Meet Daniel Phan, who was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) at just 11 years old. This genetic heart disease causes the heart muscle to become too thick, making it harder for blood to pump through the body.

Despite his condition, Daniel has always been a fighter. He received a pacemaker shortly after his diagnosis and found solace in playing music – guitar and drums became his passion.

However, as he entered adulthood, Daniel's symptoms worsened. He experienced arrhythmias without exerting himself, and on January 15, 2025, he suffered an intense episode while watching TV. He was rushed to the emergency room and spent a week in intensive care.

Due to his heart failure, Daniel required a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation at Piedmont Heart in Atlanta. This life-saving device helps pump blood through the body when the heart is too weak to do so on its own.

We spoke with Dr. Sagar Damle, cardiothoracic surgeon at Piedmont Heart, about LVADs and their importance in treating patients like Daniel who have refractory heart failure. "When medications are no longer effective, LVADs can be a lifesaving option," he explained. "They work by taking blood from the left ventricle and pumping it through the body, giving the heart a much-needed break."

But what's truly remarkable about Daniel's story is his love for Julia, who stood by him every step of the way – even proposing to her in the ICU while awaiting lifesaving surgery. Their whirlwind romance began on Facebook in 2014 and blossomed into a beautiful proposal during one of life's most challenging moments.
