Hims & Hers Withdraws Low-Cost Weight Loss Pill Amid Regulatory Pressure and Lawsuit
Telehealth provider Hims & Hers has withdrawn its compounded semaglutide pill from the market, citing pressure from top U.S. health officials and a major lawsuit filed by Novo Nordisk.
The company had announced plans to offer a low-cost alternative to Wegovy, a new weight loss pill priced at $149 per month. However, Hims & Hers' compounded version was priced at just $49 per month, sparking concerns about safety and regulatory compliance.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the company's compounded semaglutide pill may violate U.S. regulatory laws. The FDA has also stated that it will take action against any companies marketing "illegal copycat drugs."
Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy, is suing Hims & Hers for patent infringement and seeking to halt sales of compounded semaglutide products.
Safety Concerns Surround Compounded Semaglutide
Experts have raised concerns about the safety of compounded semaglutide pills, citing differences in formulation compared to brand-name Wegovy. "The active ingredient may be the same, but everything else about the pill's behavior in the body can change dramatically," said James J. Chao, MD, FACS, co-founder and chief medical officer of VedaNu Wellness.
Compounded pills are mixed by hand in small batches without stringent bioequivalence standards, which can result in varying levels of absorption. "A 2 milligram (mg) compounded semaglutide pill may not act anything like its brand-name counterpart," Dr. Chao explained.
